On July 4, 1884 France decided to give the United States an outstanding birthday gift: the Statue of Liberty! The people of France gave the statue to the people of the United States because they liked our idea of freedom.

Sculptor Frederic Bartholdi (bar-TOLE-dee) designed the statue of the famous woman holding a torch. The torch stands for freedom. Another word for freedom is liberty.

When people from around the world see the Statue of Liberty, they think of our country, the United States of America. They also think of liberty and freedom.

The Statue of Liberty is located in New York. The Statue of Liberty symbolizes freedom throughout the world.
